History of Brazilian Music

Music is a language that can bind people from any race or religion. Music is the only universal language that can bring people together on a single plane. Successful musicians from different corners of the world have crossed boundaries and secured a place in the hearts of millions all over. Such is the power of music!

Brazil is a land where music and dance flows in the mind and body of its people. The music of Brazil is full of passion and joy! The reason behind Brazil's interesting mix of musical styles is the influence of different cultures. The various genres of music in Brazil reveal a magical blend. Brazilian music has the power to captivate listeners and even compel one to shake a leg!

The history of Brazilian music gives an idea about this interesting blend of styles. Some of the first references that described the music of Brazil was in the year 1578. This was the year when Jean De Lery published 'Viagem à Terra do Brasil', known as the Journey to the Land of Brazil.

The distinctive rhythm of the music of Brazil is basically said to have evolved from the Native Americans. These natives had a typical musical composition used for their religious rituals.

In the 17th century, the slaves that were brought from Africa used an exotic blend of musical instruments from rattles to panpipes, to create unique sounds. Apart from the music, the slaves also invented their own style of sensual dance forms to match the beats of the music.

The types of Brazilian music soon started taking form and this was seen particularly in the 1870s. This was the time when choro, a musical style was developed. Basically played only in the instrumental form, the choro was then developed with the addition of different musical instruments. Samba evolved around the beginning of the 20th century. Samba is the best form of Brazilian music and dance that made an impact worldwide and continues to mesmerize music lovers.

From the fast pulsating music developed a slow melody. Romantic songs made their appearance during the 1930s. But it was in 1958, when the style, bossa nova grabbed the attention of music lovers not only in Brazil, but all across the world. The 1930s was also a period that saw the emergence of the popular form of music.

This was the time when the radio helped to popularize songs amongst the people. Music was then used even as a way to convey a message across to the public. Música Popular Brasileira, known as MPB for short, thus gained prominence and basically meant music with Brazilian origins.

By the 1980s, funk as well as rap was introduced to Brazilian music. Funk music was often used as a means of expression by singers against racism. However, by 1990s, this form of music was also associated with drugs. The 1980s was a time when heavy metal found acceptance in Brazil. Quite a few heavy metal groups rose to fame during this period.

Today, Brazilian music continues to make waves all around the world. Forms such as Samba, continue to receive much attention as one of the best styles of Brazilian music.
