A guitar song can start with any chord or scale. For a musician to determine chords of a complete song, he will need to determine which main scale it is starting in. Following are some primary chord combinations used in songs starting in a major chord.

These are only a few chord combinations. There are many more which start with 'sharps' and 'flats'. The same concept is to be used with songs starting with minor chords. Few of such chord combinations of these songs are Am - F - G, Bm - G - A, Em - C - D, and many others. An example can help you better understand. Suppose a song starts in the 'G' scale, if you are aware that G scale comprises the relative chords C and D, you can easily play the song.
An exception to this is when the song is composed of power chords or those which sound different from a standard scale. Such songs can only be played with thorough practice. For beginners, it is better to refer to a chord sheet and then play the songs.
