Madonna, the pop singer, is probably the biggest thing that has happened to the world of music so far! This August 16, 1958 born pop star from Michigan is a trained dancer. Madonna was initially employed in New York City as a backup singer to a number of local music groups.
Madonna's album called 'Madonna' included five U.S. hit singles, including 'Like a Virgin', 'Music', 'True Blue', 'Ray of Light', 'Confessions on a Dance Floor' and 'American Life'. Madonna's tryst with the celluloid began with Desperately Seeking Susan that was released in 1985. She graduated with Shanghai Surprise and Body of Evidence in 1986 and 1993 respectively. The critically acclaimed adaptation of 'Evita', the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical extravaganza won her the Golden Globe Award for 'You Must Love Me'.
She won her teenage fans over with her larger than life defiance and raunchy behavior in videos and stage appearances. Madonna became a teen icon and her international success is pretty much the outcome of the clever promotion gimmicks and intense image creation.
The Madonna fever went on to level 100 with the controversial collection of erotic photographs. She had herself exposed to the maximum for the performance in Sex and Erotica. She is credited with a West End stage debut in Up For Grabs.
The English Roses was her first children's book. Her fans rejoiced the world over as she was inducted into U.K. Music Hall of Fame!
Madonna's daughter Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, lovingly Lola, was from her affair with her trainer and lover Carlos Leon. Her earlier marriage to actor Sean Penn lasted from 1984 to 1988. Madonna's married the acclaimed British director Guy Ritchie and their son Rocco John Ritchie has an adopted brother David Banda from Malawi.

Her biggest hits in the '80s - 'Live to Tell' and the ambitious 'True Blue' met with massive commercial success. True Blue was a number one on the U.S. and U.K. charts with over five million copies sold in the U.S. alone!
The acclaim of 'Papa Don't Preach' ushered in a thriving music career for her and the 1987 number one single 'Open Your Heart' was a chart-topping hit. 'Like a Prayer', her grosser in 1989, was an album that made her a household name, with the perfect fusion of pop, rock, and dance.
Other hits include Express Yourself, Cherish, Keep It Together, Vogue, Justify My Love, Rescue Me and This Used to Be My Playground. She is also credited with great experimentalism in 'Take a Bow', 'Bedtime Stories', 'Human Nature', 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' and 'You Must Love Me'.
